Dear members of the MIT Sloan Community,
On March 31, 2008 we each received a letter from the LGBT club officers about a threatening email they received in December 2007. While our individual reactions vary, we, the signers of this letter, are unified in our support for all of the affected.
The MIT Sloan mission is to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advance management practice.
MIT Sloan brings together students with differences in gender, culture, nationality, race, ethnicity, faith, and sexual orientation. The strength of our community derives in part from the unique perspectives and experiences we each bring to MIT Sloan. While we respect an individual’s freedom of thought and speech, we believe a threat to any member of or group in our community is unacceptable. A threat to any of us is a threat to all of us.
We, the signers of this letter, commit to practice and promote tolerance, educate ourselves on our differences, and challenge our own biases through dialogue, not just here at MIT Sloan but throughout our future careers. We are also committed to moving forward and to not unduly dwelling on this incident. We hope that our fellow classmates, now and in the future, explicitly and implicitly attempt to do so as well.
This incident has given MIT Sloan the opportunity to clarify and strengthen our shared values. We will soon be inviting all members of the community to respond to an action plan survey with ideas for community changes.
We hope that these steps will help ensure that MIT Sloan maintains our global reputation for excellence in training principled business leaders and will further strengthen our unique community. Thank you for your time to hear us out.
